The Ultimate Houston Pool Opening Checklist: A 10-Step Guide

Opening your pool for the Houston summer? Our 10-step checklist covers everything from cleaning your cover to balancing your chemicals for a crystal-clear season.

Welcome to pool season in Houston! After a long winter (or what we call winter, anyway), it's time to get your backyard oasis ready for the heat. A proper pool opening is the secret to a hassle-free summer of swimming. If you skip steps, you'll be fighting algae and cloudy water for weeks. Follow this 10-step checklist to ensure a perfect pool opening.

01

Don't Drain Your Pool!

First things first: unless you have a major repair, you almost never need to drain your pool. The water from last season is full of chemicals that will help you get started this year. Draining and refilling is expensive and puts unnecessary stress on your pool shell.

02

Clean and Remove the Pool Cover

Before you do anything else, get all the leaves, gunk, and dirty water off your pool cover. A leaf blower and a submersible pump are your best friends here. Once it's clean, remove it, lay it out to dry, and store it away for the summer. A dirty cover dragged across the water will contaminate it.

03

Raise the Water Level

Your water level has probably dropped over the winter. Use a garden hose to fill it back up to the midpoint of your skimmer opening. If the level is too low, the skimmer will pull air and the pump can run dry and overheat.

04

Reconnect Your Equipment

It's time to bring your pool back to life. Reconnect your pump, filter, heater, and any other equipment you disconnected for the winter. Check all your connections carefully for any cracks or damage that may have occurred during storage. Don't turn anything on yet!

05

Prime the Pump and Open the System

Open all your return-side valves and remove any winterizing plugs from your return jets and skimmers. Open the pump lid, pour in some water to prime it, and then you're ready to flip the switch. Priming prevents the pump from running dry on first start.

06

Shock the Water

Your pool has been dormant for months. It needs a powerful dose of chlorine shock to kill off any algae and bacteria that have been growing. Follow the instructions on the package, but a good rule of thumb for a Houston pool is 2–3 pounds of shock for every 10,000 gallons. Always add shock in the evening.

07

Let the Pump Run

For the next 24–48 hours, let your pump run continuously. This will circulate the shock and filter out all the dead algae and debris. This is the most important step for getting crystal-clear water. Don't skip or shorten this step.

08

Clean the Filter

After the initial 24–48 hour run, your filter has worked hard. It's time for a deep clean. Whether you have a cartridge, sand, or DE filter, follow the manufacturer's instructions to clean it thoroughly. A dirty filter can't do its job — it just recirculates debris.

09

Test and Balance Your Chemicals

Now that the water is clear, it's time to get your chemistry right. Bring a water sample to a local pool store or use a good home test kit. You'll want to balance: pH (7.4–7.6), Alkalinity (80–120 ppm), and Calcium Hardness (200–400 ppm). Balanced chemistry keeps your equipment safe and your swimmers comfortable.

10

Start Your Regular Maintenance Schedule

Congratulations, your pool is open! Now, just stick to a weekly maintenance routine of testing, chemical balancing, skimming, and brushing to keep it sparkling all summer long. Consistent maintenance prevents the big, expensive problems.
